Some homes were built without much consideration of the kitchen in proportion to the size of the family that would likely live in the home. We’ve seen this most often in homes built in the late 90’s and early 2000’s by commercial stock home builders. That was about the time bigger bedrooms and walk in closets were the must-haves on most home buyer’s lists. As a result, the kitchens shrunk. If part of your kitchen remodeling plans include expanding the space, there are a few ways to accomplish that.
Take Space from Another Room
Often homeowners know that their kitchen remodeling plans include knocking down at least one wall to create an open concept home. When you do that, you can use space from the adjoining rooms. If you’re combining a once separate dining room and living room with your kitchen, you can eliminate a dedicated eating area in kitchen. Rather, consider countertop seating as you will have an adjacent dining space.
Enclose a Covered Patio
If you have a patio area off your kitchen already, consider enclosing it to add to your usable kitchen space. You may want to consider using the newly enclosed space for your dining area as you can surround it with windows for lots of natural light. Your current eating space can become more work or storage space in your kitchen.
Add onto Your Home
Additions are the most common way to enlarge any room in your home. Depending on your home’s layout and what you’re looking for, you may find that an addition is the only way to enlarge your kitchen. Additions come with both cost and benefits. Although it’s true that the larger the addition, the more it will cost, you will find that often the cost per square foot of addition goes down as you make a larger addition. If you choose an addition, you may find you are constrained by easement and setback limits as to how large an addition you can add to your home.
