Many homeowners know exactly what color they want for their cabinets. Some even have a good idea of what they want their backsplash to look like. However, even if they know they want quartz or marble or another natural stone, when it comes to the countertop color for their kitchen remodel, they’re stuck. Here are some tips to help you choose the right color countertop for your new kitchen.

White, Ivory and Cream Cabinets

If you have light finished cabinets, you may instantly think you need darker countertops to give your kitchen some pop. Although that is one way to go, you have other options.

  • For a clean look choose quartz – Because of the consistent patterns in quartz, it provides a clean look. When you want to keep the space bright, choose a light color quartz. You can have dark countertops with light cabinets and still have a clean look, the eye will naturally be drawn to the contrasting countertops.
  • Marble gives a rich and sophisticated look – Veining in marble varies as does the color. Both may be subtle and light or prominent with dark greys to almost black veining. If you want your countertops to be the dominate feature in your kitchen remodel, this is a great option.
  • Dark or Colored Natural Stone – If there’s a natural stone you love in a dark pattern, go for it. You’ll have an element that either adds color or provides contrast in your kitchen. Just be careful with your backsplash choice so you’re not pulling the eye in too many different directions.

Natural Wood Finishes

When you choose natural wood, you’re going to want your countertop to compliment the natural wood. We recommend quartzite, granite and other natural stone especially if your goal is to emphasize the natural appearance of wood grain in the cabinets. Try for a less busy pattern so as not to compete with the wood grain.

Dark Cabinets

Whether you have dark painted or stained cabinets, you will probably want to choose light countertops. Too many dark elements in a kitchen will make the space seem darker and smaller than it is. It’s easy to tie your dark cabinets to the light countertops with a tile backsplash that compliments both elements. As for material, any natural stone or quartz will look great.
